Behind the Portrait + Hair Style Tips

When having family portraits or business portraits professionally taken there is a ton of planning that goes into preparing for your photo shoot; a common question I get from clients is ” What do I do with my hair?!”  Luckily Sarah Heidsma of Prova Salon in Scottsdale, AZ has offered up some tips + ideas about styling your hair for your photography session.

Trends have changed over the years. Women are going with a much more natural timeless look. If you are posing for an outdoor photography session, it may be windy or humid, so pinning some hair back is always a good decision. This does not mean slicked back hair with tight, hairspray encrusted, curls. Again, think natural.

+ Create loose, piecey, curls with a 1 ½ inch barrel curling iron then pull and twirl each curl loose with a light pomade or serum.

Give yourself a beach wave by diffusing a curl and smoothing with curl cream. (Both of these curls look soft and elegant with one or both sides swept back with pins or a flower)

If curl is not your thing or if you would like to go with an edgier look; try the flat iron.

+ When wearing your hair down and straight always be sure to round brush smooth before you flat iron.

+Flat iron all the way to the scalp for stick straight, edgy locks and mid strand to ends for a more volumus look.

If your photo shoot is for your wedding, call Prova salon and set up a trial appointment with Sarah to make sure your special day is exactly how you had envisioned it.  Bring magazine photos to discuss how certain looks work with your face shape.
