What to Wear for Family Pictures | Phoenix Photographer

The most common question I get from clients is “What should I wear for my family pictures?”

Today’s blog post is intended to give you some general guidelines to follow when choosing your photography session outfits to create timeless portraits.  Clothing should compliment your look not complicate it. I believe that simple goes a long way!  As a photographer I prefer to keep the focus on the subject.

Dos and Don’ts
  • Avoid busy patterns/graphic prints/cartoons/logos/words on clothing.
  • I encourage layering (weather permitting of course) | Sweater vests, cardigans, tights, belts, headbands, jackets, hats.
  • Combine textures, layers, and bold colors with neutrals.
  • Consider dressing in the color white sparingly.  It reflects light strongly.
  • Shoes are often overlooked!  Make sure shoes are in good shape and not scuffed.  Avoid flip flops they look sloppy in photos.  Make sure shoes coordinate with the outfit.  Converse, Vans, boots, wedges all look great on camera. Bare feet are always an especially fun option!
  • Wear jewelry sparingly unless you are showcasing an important piece, like a statement necklace.
  • I highly recommend professional hair and make up for women.  Women feel really good about themselves when they have hair and makeup applied. If you tell the make up artist that you are having photos taken they will use photo ready make up that will reduce shine.

Family and Large Group Portraits

Family photographs are special because they are a legacy of who your family was for future generations to enjoy.  Clothing choices are important. Families and large groups should coordinate but not match.

  • Wear the same tones of clothing but not necessarily the same color.
  • Be mindful of clashing too many different patterns.
  • I discourage away from everyone wearing the same thing, especially with a large group.

But I always encourage people to break the rules! Just do it well!

I encourage clients to take photographs of their outfit ideas and send it to me or schedule a skype call pre-session to guide clients in clothing selection. Want to change it up a bit? Bring a couple different outfits! I highly encourage this for high school seniors, engagement sessions, or couple sessions. A dressy outfit and a casual outfit are always good choices and sometimes a third outfit for good measure (especially high school seniors.) This also is encouraged for family sessions at your home or with older children. I DO NOT encourage this for small children on location.
